Over a 10-month period, participants engage in 11 full-day sessions, including hands-on experiences like behind-the-scenes tours and expert panels. These immersive sessions create a rich learning environment and spark collaborations across industries.
Empowering the Next Generation
One of the most inspiring aspects of Leadership Macomb’s mission is its junior program, which launched 13 years ago. Designed for high school juniors, this program prepares young people for life beyond graduation with career navigation, financial literacy, mock interviews, and more. The program has been a resounding success, boasting a 100% high school graduation rate among participants and an 85% return-to-Macomb rate post-education.
“We wanted to eliminate the brain drain and show young people that Macomb County is a great place to live and work,” Karen explained. “The junior program equips them with real-world skills and connections to build their future here.”

Karen shared several success stories, including a collaboration where a program graduate helped incarcerated youth create a mural symbolizing their journey to rehabilitation. Another participant formed a partnership between Oakland University and a STEM program, giving future teachers hands-on experience.
“When people step out of their silos and see the bigger picture, amazing things happen,” Karen said. “Leadership development is about fostering these connections and empowering people to make a difference.”
